At the inaugural AI Accelerate 2025, organised by Synapxe at the Punggol Digital District on 16th June, bright minds across public healthcare and tech came together to explore the transformative power of Generative AI (GenAI) in healthcare. At the event, Synapxe featured eight innovative solutions from the GenAIus Challenge in a series of engaging showcase presentations.

In this two-part feature, we spotlight the potential of these minimum viable products that address current gaps in the healthcare ecosystem, ranging from improving clinical workflows through CareScribe, to fostering closer and more effective communication between patients, loved ones and healthcare professionals, as seen in Next-Of-Kin Update Tool and Lab Report Buddy

The GenAIus Challenge showcase is the culmination of a national call-for-innovation programme launched by Synapxe in April 2024. The programme connected over 160 healthcare professionals with tech giant partners such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft & Avanade and Google Cloud.

Here is a closer look at the three Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) from the eight groundbreaking ideas unveiled during the showcase at the event.

CareScribe by Alexandra Hospital (AH)

CareScribe is a GenAI-powered nursing shift handover tool that transcribes verbal handovers into structured documentation using real-time speech-to-text and natural language processing. Developed by AH’s Research Office team with the support of Avanade, this multi-modal GenAI tech tool aims to eliminate manual notetaking and reduce the time taken to carry out shift handover for nurses.

By alleviating the pressure nurses face in juggling hands-on care with the need to meet administrative requirements, nurses can dedicate more time on bedside care without compromising documentation quality or continuity of care.

Key features of CareScribe include:

  • Voice-to-Text Transcription using Azure AI Speech, facilitating data extraction
  • Intelligent summarisation of clinical information using GPT-4
  • Automated organisation of patient details into structured notes using the ABCDEFG framework (Assessment, Background, Conditions, Drugs, Equipment, Family, and Goals). The template ensures consistent handover format and completeness of information
  • Smart search to support quick retrieval of information and expedite clinical decision-making

While it is still under evaluation and has yet to be implemented within the National University Health System (NUHS) cluster, Ravi Shankar, a Research Fellow at Alexandra Hospital, and a member of the development team shared that, “The challenge’s iterative feedback process and exposure to real clinical environments was invaluable in shifting our approach, ensuring our solution truly addresses nursing needs rather than just demonstrating AI capabilities.”

Next-of-Kin (NOK) Update Tool by Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) with AWS

Providing timely updates to patients’ Next-of-Kin (NOK) is often time-consuming and dependent on the availability and scheduling of both healthcare staff and NOKs. This can lead to incomplete information or communication delays, especially when updates must be done in person or over the phone.

To address this, Sengkang Hospital, in collaboration with AWS, developed the NOK Update Tool – a GenAI-powered messaging system that automatically generates timely updates for patients loved ones through SMS.

Some examples of the one-way SMS messages that NOKs can receive about patients include changes in patient location, completed procedures, discharge status or reminders to bring items from home.

Key features include:

  • Interpreting medical shorthand (abbreviations that healthcare staff use to shorten medical terminology)
  • Extracting relevant patient information from clinical notes
  • Generating clear, concise, and readable messages for NOKs

The NOK Update Tool Project Team from SKH, shared that The GenAIus Challenge has not only helped us develop a useful tool but also has given us valuable insights into how AI can meaningfully enhance healthcare operations.”

This solution is currently in development and is not meant to replace in-depth conversations about medical diagnosis and treatment with clinicians. NOK Update Tool will be evaluated for piloting in select hospital wards.

Lab Report Buddy by Synapxe

Understanding lab test results can be challenging for some patients, especially those who struggle with medical jargon, lengthy test histories and limited consultation time with doctors to interpret results and process the information. This often leads to confusion, anxiety and reduced engagement with healthcare professionals in managing their health.

To bridge this gap, Synapxe developed Lab Report Buddy, a multilingual AI-powered chatbot that breaks down complex lab reports into simple, easy-to-understand explanations.

Using the infrastructure of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Bedrock, Lab Report Buddy is designed for both patients and healthcare providers with features like:

  • Seamless integration with HealthHub for automated retrieval of patient lab reports
  • Manual uploading of images or PDF versions of lab reports
  • Summarisation of complex results and simplifies medical jargon
  • Generation of clear explanations and accurate interpretations of the reports
  • Automated organisation and highlighting of abnormal results to empower patients to make more informed decisions about their healthcare
  • Identification of key trends and points of concerns

With a more structured form of information and abnormalities quickly identified by both healthcare professionals and patients, the review process is streamlined, and more time can be allocated for meaningful patient discussions.

As the Lab Report Buddy Project Team from Synapxe, states, “The GenAIus Challenge gave us the platform and tools to explore how GenAI could bridge the communication gap for patients who struggle with extensive and complex lab reports, enabling them to understand these in a safe, meaningful way.”

Upon successful validation, Lab Report Buddy may be integrated into the future roadmap for HealthHub AI

Conclusion

The GenAIus Challenge is more than just an intellectual contest. It is a testament to the power of collaboration between healthcare professionals and technology partners. From easing documentation load to improving communication with families and empowering patients through accessible insights, these solutions reflect a future where AI enhances, not replaces, human care.

Stay tuned for Part 2 of our GenAIus Challenge innovations feature. Five more innovative projects tackling critical areas like clinical decision support, care planning and diagnostic efficiency will be highlighted.
