The popularity of artificial intelligence is driving market demand, the Singapore Computer Society’s two programs builds cloud technology talent
The popularity of AI has driven market demand for talents familiar with cloud technology. With the support of IMDA and SkillsFuture Singapore, the Singapore Computer Society (SCS) launched a cloud technology skills pathway program to build a strong pipleline of talent.
According to a joint statement issued by the three parties on Friday (August 29), the Skills Pathway for Cloud initiative is primarily aimed at new graduates and mid-career individuals seeking to enter the cloud technology sector. The initiative is led by the industry and has 14 participating employers, including DBS Bank, ST Engineering, and Synapxe.
The program is structured into two levels: participants who successfully pass all course assessments in the first level will have the opportunity to intern at participating companies; participants who pass the second level assessment will have the opportunity to interview for four entry-level positions, namely cloud infrastructure engineer, cloud software engineer, cloud solution architect (assistant) and full-time jobs as development, security and operation platform engineer.
In an interview, SCS President Edward Chen stated that cloud technology is a crucial foundation for AI. With the wider adoption of AI across various industries, demand for cloud technology will surge. Beyond digital service providers like Microsoft and Google, large enterprises also need relevant talent to build their own cloud infrastructure to support their digital transformation and AI initiatives.
“These talents are in high demand now and will be even more so in the future.”
Cloud technology specialists play a key role in realizing the National AI Strategy 2.0
DBS’ CIO Tan Choon Boon said that cloud technology specialists play a crucial role in achieving the goals of Singapore’s National AI Strategy 2.0 and benefits the digital economy. The new programme will strengthen the development of cloud technology talent and provide guidance to those interested in seizing opportunities.
Alan Goh, ACE and Director of Platform Services at Synapxe, said that if employees are able to acquire the necessary technology skills upstream, they will be more competent in their jobs faster. The new program will help participants master cloud technologies applicable to enterprise environments, which is different from academic or hobby requirements.
"This way, we can cultivate more suitable talent and they can contribute more effectively."
The Cloud Technology Skills Pathway Programme is the second skills pathway programme launched by SCS. The Cybersecurity Skills Pathway Programme, launched in July last year, has been very well received, with around 180 participants securing internships and jobs through the programme to date.
Separately, Amazon Web Services and technology training company Trainocate will train up to 100 graduates and mid-career individuals in generative AI skills over the next two years through the AWS Career Launchpad with Trainocate.
The onboarding program, which lasts from six to 12 months, will combine instructor-led courses, online learning, and on-the-job practical projects. It covers a variety of career development opportunities, including solution architects, software developers, and AI and machine learning engineers.
The Amazon Web Services - Creative Information Career Development Platform is supported by the Infocomm Media and Information Technology Agency's Accelerated Training and Professional Development Programme. Participants can combine the various modules and certificates offered by the Amazon Web Services - Creative Information Career Development Platform to progress towards a bachelor's degree from the Singapore Institute of Technology.
