Close to 70 use cases submitted for exploration

Synapxe, the national HealthTech agency, has unveiled a call-for-innovation to encourage the use of generative AI (GenAI) within the public healthcare sector. Named the GenAIus Challenge, it aims to provide a safe pathway and support community to empower public healthcare professionals to solve their daily workflow challenges through innovative and practical GenAI-powered solutions.

More than 160 professionals across the public healthcare sector have participated in the challenge, including doctors, nurses and administrators. Together, they have submitted close to 70 use cases for exploration. Examples include clinical decision support systems to assist speech therapists in generating clinical management plans and a GenAI-based messaging application to support clinicians in disseminating timely updates on patients to their next-of-kin. There were also non-clinical use cases, such as healthcare subsidy assistants and call-centre chatbots to help officers provide personalised real-time responses to incoming queries.

A guided learning experience, supported by Synapxe’s industry tech partners

Teams have completed stage one in a three-stage guided learning experience, facilitated by Synapxe’s technology partners, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Avanade & Microsoft and Google Cloud.

The Ideation Workshops held on 8, 11 and 23 April were each hosted by one of the technology partners, with guidance on harnessing GenAI through the complimentary use of their proprietary tools and methodologies.

Shortlisted use cases will proceed to the design and development of Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), and finally to the potential deployment of selected MVPs into the real-world.

Benefits of participating in the Challenge

By encouraging user collaboration and ideation specific to the healthcare sector, the GenAI solutions generated have the potential for larger scale deployment to improve Singapore’s healthcare processes and outcome.

Through the Challenge, participants will unlock a multitude of benefits and opportunities such as:

  • Transformative Potential: Participants leverage the power of GenAI to tackle real-world healthcare challenges and make a lasting impact on the industry.
  • Tech Partnerships: Participants collaborate with leading industry tech partners in the end-to-end process of developing GenAI solutions.
  • Networking Opportunities: Participants connect with like-minded healthcare professionals, AI experts, and industry leaders, fostering deeper collaboration and knowledge exchange.

Part of a series of new initiatives for healthcare professionals to engage with GenAI technology

The Challenge is an integral component of Synapxe’s GenAIus Programme. Newly launched this year, the Programme consists of a series of initiatives to accelerate the awareness and adoption of GenAI technologies in the public healthcare sector. These initiatives aim to cultivate an innovative mindset and build a like-minded community equipped with the knowledge and experience to harness cutting-edge technology to support and improve Singapore’s healthcare system.

The GenAIus Programme started with the Generative AI Week in January 2024 which hosted over 3,000 participants from across the public healthcare sector. Over the course of five days, participants learnt about the technology and how the safe and responsible use of AI can unlock its potential to transform healthcare delivery, improve patient outcomes and drive efficiency.

Another initiative launching this year is the GenAIus Hub, a GenAI learning repository for public healthcare users. It will house a plethora of on-demand resources developed by Synapxe’s industry technology partners. Plans include expanding access to private instructor-led courses and hands-on workshops on various GenAI related topics. More details will be shared at a later date.

Andy Ta, Director of Data aNalytics and AI, and Chief Data Officer at Synapxe said, “Synapxe plays a pivotal role in supporting the vision of a healthier Singapore through empowering public healthcare institutions and the healthcare workforce to leverage new AI technologies in a safe way. I am encouraged by the high level of interest shown by the participants in these workshops, and the dedication demonstrated within our public healthcare sector towards problem solving and innovation. By taking a comprehensive and structured approach to support healthcare professionals’ learning cycle, we hope to empower them to use innovative new technologies, such as GenAI. Our partnerships with technology leaders such as AWS, Avanade & Microsoft and Google Cloud enable us to harness their expertise and capabilities to address complex challenges and develop innovative intelligent technological solutions to meet real-world healthcare needs.”
